Our History

Our agency was founded in 1955 by Peyton Hanks under the name Hanks Insurance Agency. Under his ownership, and the later ownership by Elwood and Shirley Alderman, the agency grew to become one of Galax's premier independent agencies. Due to the sustained growth, the agency gained the attention of well known, national insurance companies and Progressive, Allstate and Nationwide were asking Hanks Insurance Agency to sell their products. In 2019, Woodlawn residents Rickey and Melanie Stone purchased the agency and changed the name to Galax Insurance. Our agency continues to grow with new products and insurance companies and with a new focus on modern methods of connecting with customers. Customers can now reach the agency in person, by phone, email, texts, our website or on Facebook Messenger. We are thankful and blessed to be a part of the Galax community.
